Alternative Feedstocks

OXEM is particularly active in the research and development of alternative feedstocks for biodiesel production. To this end the Company is participating in various projects of which two are related to jatropha and algae.

MICROALGAE:
OXEM is part of a research consortium named M.A.M.B.O. (MicroAlgae: raw Material for Bio-Oil), dedicated to evaluate the technical, economical and environmental feasibility of microalgae production systems for biodiesel generation able to produce at least 15 to 20 tons of oil per hectare per year. At the end of the first phase of the project, if results will be positive, a demonstration plant will be erected.
OXEM is also a founding member of the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA).

JATROPHA:
OXEM is involved in a project for the cultivation of around 1,000 hectares of jatropha in Burkina Faso; for this initiative OXEM is collaborating with NGO Shalom and the consultancies Agroils and Biofuels Partners. The project has a strong social connotation as it aims to provide a livelihood for the local people; the vegoil derived from the plantations will be used primarily for local power generation.
